How to Encourage Summer Reading

By Leigh Williams
  • Bed / Bath / Home
I vividly remember doing whatever I could to NOT read over my summer breaks as a child – and sometimes I feel like my kiddos are taking a page out of my book (see what I did there?!).

Here’s a few tips we’ve implemented in our home to help increase the number of pages read this summer!

1.     Mix it up! I don’t think kids have to read books for their pages to count! We’ve subscribed to lots of magazines the kids enjoy reading and it’s really helped to raise their interest in reading! Plus, magazines usually have quite a few activities which the kids really enjoy as well.

You could also try out books on the iPad or other digital device! Many libraries will allow you to “check out” books digitally so you don’t even have to go to the library to check them out!

2.     Make it something the whole family does together. Chances are you could benefit from reading a few pages a day, too! Set aside at least 10-15 minutes a day when the whole family can sit down together and get a few pages in together!

3.     Find a challenge to join. Many libraries run “reading challenges” during the summers! I definitely recommend this one because if your kiddos are competitive like mine, they will be more motivated to get some reading done if there’s a prize at the end of the challenge!

I hope you’re able to implement one of these tips this summer! As I’ve grown older, I’ve definitely come to appreciate a good book and some quiet reading time!
